Description

This lesson explains how a short circuit in the coaxial plant affects an EnerSys XM3/XM3.1 standby power supply. Learners will explore how current normally flows through the HFC network, what happens when a short occurs, and how the power supply’s foldback protection responds. The training covers the step-by-step cycling process, how to stop it safely, and how to troubleshoot and restore normal operation. By the end, technicians will understand how to identify, isolate, and correct plant shorts without unnecessary equipment replacement.

Objectives

Course Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain how electrical current flows in a properly operating HFC power circuit.

  2. Identify what happens when a short circuit occurs in the coaxial plant and how it affects the XM3/XM3.1 standby power supply.

  3. Describe the standby power supply’s foldback protection mode and its off/on cycling process.

  4. Demonstrate how to safely stop the cycling process by disconnecting the batteries and shutting off the battery breaker.

  5. Troubleshoot and locate short circuits within the plant using proper diagnostic steps.

  6. Restore the power supply to normal operation after repairs, verifying output voltage and clearing alarms.
